Introduction

I am a professor emeritus and currently academic guest at the Department of Computational Linguistics (Phonetic and Speech Sciences), University of Zurich. My main scientific interest is focused on the question of the fundamental syntactic form character of vocal and graphic expressions. My team, my colleagues and I have published our work in numerous articles and books on the matter and I am the leading author of the associated extensive sound and picture archives, which are accessible online.

This website concerns the work that my team, my colleagues and I have done on vowel and voice quality.

Research on vowel and voice quality

Questions : What "physics" is the human voice subject to? How are the perceived sound qualities and identities interrelated to the physical properties? What do these interrelations tell us about the voice and speech, both in everyday life and in the performing arts?

Interest : Relationship between the basic perceptual characteristics of the voice when speaking and it observable physical properties.

Motivation : Lack of a phenomenological description documenting the possible extent of variation in vocal utterances.

Actual Focus : Perceptual and acoustic characteristics of vowel sounds, vowel qualities and voice qualities, including the comparison of untrained voices with trained stage voices
Large-scale vowel sound database
